All water leak detection would be an easy task if life were perfect. Determining the next step toward a repair it is a lot easier when a leak is present, and you can visually identify the source; like with a leaking pipe under the kitchen sink or a toilet gasket for example. The problem becomes significantly more complicated when the leak in your plumbing system is in an area that is not visually accessible. In a short amount of time to hardwood and tile surfaces, a leak underneath your bathroom floor can cause a lot of damage. If you are going to repair your leak before any further cosmetic, or worse, structural damage can occur, time is of the essence. Today, we at Acme Leak Detection would like to discuss the differences between Hydrostatic Testing and Isolation Testing.
Water Leak Detection with Hydrostatic Testing
For testing pipes and tanks for leaks, hydrostatic testing is a process commonly used. A tank being examined and then monitoring water levels in the system for any changes or the test is performed by pressurizing the pipe. A leak in that system is indicated in the event the water level decreases at the monitoring point. A hydrostatic test will usually require the removal of a ground floor toilet in the plumbing environment. With an inflatable rubber plug, the structure’s plumbing system is blocked off at the main connection to the sewer line. For about twenty minutes, the water level at the observation point is noted and monitored, and there is a leak in the plumbing that needs to be located and repaired should the water level drop during the pressure test. The process becomes a little more refined, and this next level of water leak detection is referred to as “isolation testing,” once the presence of a leak is confirmed.
Test Water Pipes for Leaks with Isolation Testing
Consisting of performing one of two different tests, isolation testing is used to once a leak in the system has been confirmed. A specific section of the plumbing system is blocked and pressurized with water or compressed air, depending on the location being isolation tested, and the location of the leak is further narrowed down with each test if the pressure decreases during the test. To ensure the integrity of our repair, we perform the same hydrostatic tests once a leak is successfully located and repaired. Only by licensed and experienced plumbing technicians, and all our work is warrantied, our testing and repair work is performed.
